Christmas Decorating

Christmas decorating for us has always been a bit random – put up the Christmas tree and maybe throw a bit of tinsel on our entrance table. Now that the kids are getting into the Christmas spirit, it’s time to put more effort into Christmas decorating.

One reason I haven’t done a lot of decorating in the past is that I don’t want lots of hooks (or holes) in the walls that are only going to get used in December. Well, that’s not much of an excuse these days, with Command adhesive hooks by 3M.

Merry Christmas Banner (2)

I made this Merry Christmas banner with sparkly mesh fabric from my local fabric store.

Merry Christmas Banner (1)Command Hooks

I put holly at the ends of the cord, but that’s more to cover my ugly knots than the hooks. The clear hooks (with clear sticky strips) blend right in. Come back later in the week for a tutorial for the banner.

Tinsel

The tinsel is hung using the 3M Decorating Clips. (I really want to string some fairy lights around with these, but the only set we’ve got are on the Christmas tree.)

 Christmas Paper Origami Wreath

Here’s my first attempt at some festive origami – a star wreath made from origami paper squares. I’ve got a semi-tutorial coming for them too!

Paper Snowflakes (3)

I had the most fun making a winter wonderland for the kids. No snow at Christmas here (or any other time of year!), but I turned the passage way leading to the family bathroom into a snowstorm.

I crocheted some chain and linked them together to make a grid, and used four Command hooks to hang them almost at the ceiling. I then hung paper snowflakes and icicles with wool from the grid at different lengths to create the snow.

My kids are captivated by it and keep telling me to come and look at it. I put it just out of their reach though. Command Clear Hooks hold strongly, but I don’t trust the kids not to pull the whole thing down.

I still want to add some loops to the Santa sacks that I made the kids and hang them from our wine rack (closest thing we’ve got to a fireplace!). The clear hooks (with clear sticky strips) blend right in to the dark wood.

There’s still a bit of work to be done to fully deck out the house, but I’m sure each year, the decorations will grow. Stay tuned later in the week for more details on my homemade decorations.

What decorations have you made this year?

Disclosure: I am participating in the #3M Christmas campaign. I received a VISA gift card for this post courtesy of 3M via Digital Parents Collective. I am also in the running to win an iPad3. As always, all opinions are purely my own.
