Snowflake & Snowmen Cookies

When I was 11 or 12, I did a cake decorating course with some friends during the school holidays. We learnt piping by decorating cookies. It was a lot of fun but my skills are a bit rusty so I bought the Craftsy course Decorating Essentials: Designer Cookies with Autumn Carpenter (author of “The Complete Photo Guide to Cookie Decorating“). My daughter’s Frozen party was just the excuse I needed to get back into cookie-decorating.

For my first attempt at doing run-sugar cookie decorating, I decided to start with simple shapes. With the Frozen theme of the party, snowflakes and snowmen were great options.

I used the cookie recipe from the course, and it produced a lovely cookie that wasn’t too sweet or crumbly. The course also includes a royal icing recipe. I didn’t have meringue powder so I used a royal icing mix from my local kitchen supplies store.

Autumn provides detailed instructions on how to get the right consistency for the royal icing. I didn’t get it quite right as the icing ran off some of the cookies.

I experimented with piping different colours together for a flat design, marbling (running a toothpick through the icing to create different effects) and adding dimension by building up layers icing. I cheated and used edible ink pens for the mouth and buttons for the snowmen. I didn’t have the time to mix up more icing colours.

For a first attempt, I was happy with how my cookies turned out. Especially since I’m not the most artistic of people.

Along with run sugar techniques, the course also covers decorating cookies with rolled fondant, edible images, hand painting, and more. Autumn Carpenter makes beautiful biscuits and my skills are nowhere near as good as hers. I learnt a lot and I was really happy with the result of my daughter’s party.

Looks like I have to find a few more excuses to make decorated sugar cookies, and try some of the other techniques.

  1. You did a great job for your first time! Practice is definitely the best way to master it and I have done this course too and found it helpful. Still not enough practice to get mine looking like Sweet Sugar Belle’s cookies but getting better. I don’t know how they can mix up so many different colours and consistencies!!!
