Spring Top Week – I did it!

I did it and it took me much less time than I expected. One weekend of a very kind husband who entertained our son while I sat at the sewing machine, and I have a Spring Top (OK, Autumn/Fall here in Oz), and I’m really pleased with the result.

As I mentioned previously, I used Simplicity pattern 3838 and the fabric Ionia in sea glass, from Odyssea by Momo for Moda (courtesy of Whipstitch).

And here is the finished product:

It passed the test that I didn’t want to take it off when I tried on the finished product. My husband’s comment was “The clothes you made in the past looked homemade, but that top doesn’t.” Wow, what a compliment.

I love the material. I love the colour. I love the fit – it clings just where I want it, and flares to hide the bits I don’t like so much. It’s got a bit of space for my preggy-belly for the next couple of months:

But is something I’d still wear when my body returns to its original shape (hopefully):

 (Suck that belly in!)

I’m so proud that I did a decent job with the zip and gathers – not perfect but way better than what I’ve done before. Taking my time and thinking through each step really helped – I must be getting mature!

Funnily enough, I made the same mistake on this top that made me get an A minus instead of an A for the first garment I ever made – a T-Shirt in Home Economics class in high school. Just looking at my little error gave me flashbacks. I’m not going to say what it is, in case the judges read this, and you can hardly see it.

I’m not completely sold on the sleeves – I think there is a little too much puff for my style, and will probably try to flatten them out a bit on the next top. Yes, I really like this pattern and think I’ll make at least another top – probably the two-tone option next.
