Sew Ready to Play: UNO Shorts

I'm Feelin' Crafty

I’m guest posting today at I’m Feelin’ Crafty for the fun Sew Ready to Play series (hello to any visitors from there!). The game I chose to “play” with was UNO (just about the only game my older brother and I could play together that didn’t end with me in tears!). I made a fun pair of UNO shorts for Little Man:

Let’s take a closer look at the details: I used a basic flat-front shorts pattern, cutting the pieces out of black drill fabric from my local chain fabric store. I rounded the corners on the bottom right-hand corner for both front pieces and the top left for the left leg only to create the curved feel of the original cards.

The applique shapes were hand-cut from felt and I machine-sewed a row of straight stitches around the edges to attach them to the shorts. I just pinned them in place and didn’t both with using Heat’n’Bond due to the natural grippiness of the felt (although it did go a bit wonky in places).

I serged the edges of the shorts that wouldn’t be covered in bias tape. I sewed the front and back crotch and inseams. Then I pinned bias tape on the bottom and side seams to create the framed effect of the cards.

I sewed the bias tape onto the back pieces. Then I overlapped and pinned the back piece (without bias tape) under the front piece (with bias tape), and sewed through the layers of bias tape, front and back pieces to create the side seams in one lot of sewing, following around the rest of the leg front piece. (I should have taken some photos of this, but I wasn’t sure it was going to work!)

Then I created the elastic casing and threaded the elastic in the back half of the shorts, and finished off the waist band. Here’s the final product on my model:

Yes, the “shorts” are really long but Little Man is growing fast and we’re only just heading into Spring here. Hopefully he’ll get lots of wear out of them.

Head over to I’m Feelin’ Crafty for more photos of Little Man modelling his shorts, and check out the other fun projects for Sew Ready to Play.

This is very clever! My kids love Uno and someone gave them Uno Tip for Christmas where you not only play the cards but have to try not to tip the scales. Now where did I put that felt?…
