My health kick continues in fits and starts. I still lapse into old habits just a little too easily. One way I kick-start my healthy eating (and keep going back to when I get off track) is smoothies. I’m not big breakfast eater and a smoothie for breakfast is a nice way to start the day.
When I read about healthy living, whole food diets, paleo etc on other blogs, the smoothies sound, well, like a lot of hard work. They have mysterious powders and supplements, and ingredients I’ve never heard of. While these “superfoods” may pack a nutritional punch, it’s all too intimidating when you’re starting a healthy eating journey.
Smoothies are meant to be quick and easy – not something overwhelming and stressful. So here’s my fruit smoothie for beginners. Simple ingredients that you probably usually buy anyway:
That’s all the ingredients right there – one apple, one banana and a cup of water. Peel the banana. Cut the apple into quarters and remove the core. Put it in a blender, wizz it up for about a minute on maximum (I like to make extra certain there are no chunks!), pour it into a glass and your smoothie is served.
For breakfast, sometimes this isn’t the most filling, so I like to put a little bit more in it. Pureharvest sent me a gift hamper of their products and I added Coco Quench to my smoothie instead of water. It adds a subtle coconut-y flavour and makes it more filling.
If I need a bit of colour, I throw in a handful of blueberries or strawberries. If I’m feeling like a hippy, I throw in some kale or baby spinach. It’s a great basic recipe, and a place to start in the world of smoothies.
