Bucket Hat and KCWC Wrap Up

Day 6 was supposed to be spent making pyjamas, but I got a little distracted by the Flickr Pool and was inspired to make an Oliver + S Bucket hat (using the free pattern here) for Little Miss. She desperately needed a new hat for summer, so it was a welcome diversion!

The print fabric is June Blooms in Pink by Alexander Henry and I think the pink is from a Kona Cotton bundle I bought a while ago from Pink Chalk Fabrics.

I used the “no hand sewing” method from A Little Gray (since I’m not a fan of hand-sewing). I found this project a little frustrating to sew and didn’t really get into the flow of it, like I usually do when I sew. This was partly because I used iron-on interfacing, and for some reason, I used it on the sides as well as the brim (applied it to the pink hat side). This made it really difficult to ease in the curves. I find easing in and sewing curves a bit of a struggle – something I need more practice with, maybe I should make more hats! I ended up with a little gather in a couple of places. They’re only small though, so I’m sure I’m the only person who’ll notice.

I’m happy with the end result, and Little Miss loves wearing it so far. Got to protect that lovely skin!

Sewing didn’t happen on Day 7 – a combination of a really bad night’s sleep thanks to Little Miss (I can’t sew when I’m tired – it’s just a disaster) and we had a big day shopping for camping supplies (we’re about to become a camping family – not something I’ve done a lot of, anyone have some good tips?).

KCWC Wrap Up 2012

So the week ended up with 5 days of sewing instead of 7. I made a Birthday dress, with matching bloomers and hairclip, a pair of pyjama pants and a hat all for Little Miss (hmmm, Little Man missed out this time!). Not as much as I had planned, but still a good effort. It was nice to get back into sewing a little more regularly. Let’s hope I can keep it up!
