Space-Themed Birthday Party Food
Last week, I shared the games we played for my son’s space-themed birthday party. Today, I’m going to share the space-themed birthday party food.
Planets and Space Sugar Cookies
I’m always looking for an excuse to make sugar cookies and practice my cookie decorating techniques (which still needs a LOT of practice!). When I started planning the party, I was looking for space cookie cutters, and came across the Patchwork Cutters Space Set (affiliate link).
It’s a cake decorating/fondant cutter set, rather than cookie cutters, but it inspired me to give fondant-covered cookies a go. This technique was covered in the cookie-decorating Craftsy class I did a while ago, and I thought it might be less taxing on my limited artistic skills than piping royal icing.
I loved how the cookies turned out, but I don’t think it was any quicker than piping royal icing. Maybe because it was a hot day and the fondant was a bit sticky, maybe because I should start with something simpler than those fiddly cutters when learning a new technique!
With my son’s guidance on the colours, we made the sun and the rest of the planets in the solar system (including the asteroid belt – or maybe that’s just stars!).
I love the details of Earth, but man it was fiddly getting the fondant in place. There was lots of balling it up and starting again before I got the hang of it! I then experimented with the space station, astronaut and rocket cutters.
I used rice malt syrup as the glue, since I didn’t have piping gel. It seemed to work well enough to keep the fondant attached.
I used white Satin Ice fondant, that I coloured with Wilton Gel Colouring (I wasn’t ready to buy a full collection of fondant colours!). The black was Fondarific buttercream fondant. I wasn’t sure I’d be able to tint the white fondant, and it came in a small tub at my local kitchenware store.
Fruit skewer rockets
I like to include fruit at a kid’s birthday party. Especially with my son having a summer birthday, fruit can be refreshing and balances out the treat food. For the space theme, I made fruit skewer rockets, from rockmelon, watermelon and apples.
I noticed most kids put one on their plate, and they all got eaten!
Honey Joy Meteorites
Honey joys are a classic party food, so I decided they could be meteorites. I’m not sure the kids realised (and I didn’t get around to labelling the food with cute names), but well, it worked for me!
I used the recipe from the Kellogg’s website (and from the Cornflakes pack) – sticking with a tried-and-true recipe!
Saturn’s Rings
You can’t go wrong with Cheezels at a birthday party. Every kid has to put one on each finger, and eat them off. It’s just a way of life! In my mind, they were Saturn’s Rings, but once again, no labels, so no one else probably realised!
Sausage rolls
Finally, no birthday party is complete without sausage rolls. I asked on Facebook what cute space name I should give them, but since I didn’t end up making labels, I never picked a name!
Here’s how it all looked together. The party was for afternoon tea, so we didn’t have a huge amount of food.
Lastly, we had the Moon Birthday Cake, but I’ll share all the details of that in my next blog post…
