The Dissatisfaction of Infinite Housework

The biggest frustration of housework is the feeling that the job is never done. There is always something more to clean, organise or tidy and the washing just keeps on coming. Two small kids at home makes it worse. No sooner have I cleaned under the dining table (or anywhere else they inhabit), and the crumbs are back the next time they come through.

I never feel the satisfaction of finishing.

So what is the solution?

A small shift in attitude is required. The housework will never all be done, but I can decide what needs to be done each day. When the list is complete, it’s time to put my feet up or do something fun. If I see something else that needs to be cleaned, add it to the list for another day. Simple!

OK, it’s not that simple, but as I establish routines and task lists and setting realistic goals for myself, it’s becoming easier.

Housecleaning is an endless struggle, but maybe with a small change in mindset, I can appreciate my day-to-day achievements and not feel so overwhelmed.

Do you feel frustrated because the housecleaning never ends? Do you set goals and relax when they’re done? How do you get passed the never-ending-ness of it all?

  1. There is something wonderful about looking at a kitchen that I’ve just finished cleaning. It makes me feel rested (weird, I know). But for some reason I feel like it’s the only room in the house I have a handle on. Doesn’t matter what I do to the lounge I can’t fix that… And as for the Dining room… moving right along… But I feel immensely satisfied when I’ve finished in the kitchen. Especially at night. Because no one can touch it while they’re sleeping, and I’m the first one up in the morning, so it still looks lovely… then what happens during the day is out of my control, so whatever.

    1. I’m trying to get into the habit of cleaning the kitchen properly in the evenings, while hubby is getting the kids off to bed. It’s a nice feeling at the end of the day to have a clean kitchen (although I’ve been guilty in the past of not bothering).

I also try to keep our bedroom as a bit of a haven from the chaos.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  2. i generally try not to bother myself too much with house work. I hoover only when i can stand it no longer. I clean loos only when they need it. I just don’t see the point of doing something only for it to be grubby again in 5 mins. i may do more house work as my kids get older and the effect lasts for longer. i have given in!

  3. It helps to know others struggle with the same problem. I was feeling like a complete failure because the house is managed chaos. I have 15 month old twins and nothing stays clean long!
