How to Crochet a Skinny Scarf

Well, the weather’s starting to cool down and it’s time to start thinking about some warmer clothes (actually, no – the temperatures have only dropped a few degrees and the humidity’s gone up, so summer doesn’t seem to be ending here anytime soon).

Last year, I crocheted a couple of skinny scarves. They may be small, but keep me warm enough in our not-too-cold winters. Added bonus: it makes my Mum-uniform look a little more stylish.

This pattern is adapted from this free project sheet from Joann’s, but I only did the scallops on one side and made it skinnier. This makes it look simpler, and more my style.

The one thing I love about a scarf is the gauge doesn’t matter. So pick about the right size hook for your yarn, and away you go. It’s a quick project (even considering how slow I am at crochet), so it will be done before you know it.

Here’s the pattern:

Materials

One skein of 12 ply yarn (or less – this is a great project for using up small amounts)
6mm crochet hooks or sizes needed to obtain gauge
Yarn needle

Instructions

Note: all instructions use US nomenclature (since I learnt from US websites!)

Ch 203 loosely

Row 1: DC in fourth ch from hook, DC in each Ch across, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as first DC), DC in each stitch, turn.

Row 3: Skip first 2 sts, * in next st, make scallop (1sc, 2hdc, 1dc,2hdc, 1sc), skip next st, sl st in next st, skip next st; repeat from * across to last st, sl st in last st.

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

And there you have it! Here’s a photo of it in action last year (when I had long hair!):
